Electrical Compliance for Commercial Premises

Staying compliant with electrical regulations isn’t just about ticking boxes for insurers or inspectors. It’s about protecting your staff, customers, and premises, reducing risk, and avoiding costly fines, failures, or unplanned downtime.

At E.R Electrical, we support commercial clients across Cheltenham and Gloucestershire with essential electrical compliance services, helping you stay safe, legal, and confident that your systems are up to standard.  Below, we break down two of the most important compliance checks every business should understand: PAT Testing and Fixed Wire Testing (EICR).

PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing)

Everyday electrical equipment such as kettles, computers, extension leads, and power tools can pose a serious risk if they develop faults. PAT testing is designed to identify these issues early, before they become dangerous.

PAT testing involves visual inspections and electrical tests on portable appliances to ensure they are safe to use and comply with current UK regulations. While PAT testing is not a legal requirement in itself, UK law does require employers and duty holders to ensure electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition.

Why PAT Testing Matters:

  • Reduces the risk of electric shock and fire
  • Helps demonstrate compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations
  • Supports insurance and health & safety requirements
  • Minimises equipment failure and disruption

How Often Should PAT Testing Be Carried Out?

For offices and most commercial environments, annual PAT testing is typically recommended. However, frequency can vary depending on:

  • The type of equipment
  • How often it is used
  • The working environment

We’re happy to advise on a testing schedule that suits your business.

Fixed Wire Testing (EICR – Electrical Installation Condition Report)

While PAT testing covers portable equipment, Fixed Wire Testing focuses on the permanent electrical installation within your premises. This includes wiring, distribution boards, sockets, lighting circuits, and protective devices.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) provides a detailed assessment of the safety and condition of your electrical system, highlighting any defects, deterioration, or non-compliance with current regulations.

What Does an EICR Achieve?

  • Confirms your electrical installation is safe to use
  • Identifies potential hazards before they become serious issues
  • Demonstrates compliance with legal and insurance obligations
  • Provides clear recommendations for remedial works, if required

How Often Is an EICR Required?

For most commercial properties, an EICR should be carried out at least every 5 years.

However, higher-risk environments may require more frequent inspections, typically every 1 to 3 years, including:

  • Industrial sites
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Schools and public buildings
  • Premises open to the public

Always check your industry-specific requirements, as additional regulations may apply.
