Powering Secure Operations: Comprehensive Electrical Installation at Tewkesbury Business Park
Overview
A leading technology company based in Tewkesbury Business Park needed to upgrade their electrical infrastructure to support growing operational demands. E.R. Electrical Services delivered a complete, end-to-end electrical fit-out designed to support critical server infrastructure, modernise workspace lighting, and ensure complete compliance with the latest safety regulations. By providing targeted power distribution, bespoke wiring containment, and energy-efficient lighting upgrades, we helped create a resilient and highly functional workspace.
The Customer
Our client is a forward-thinking technology company based in Tewkesbury Business Park. Their operations depend on highly reliable power systems to support sensitive server equipment, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and a modern open-plan office environment.
The Challenge
Upgrading an active facility to support advanced IT infrastructure requires precision and careful planning. Our client required a robust power distribution network spanning multiple floors to support new server racks and communication rooms within their premises at Tewkesbury Business Park. They also needed to modernise their open-plan office lighting while ensuring strict adherence to BS7671 electrical safety standards.
Key challenges included:
- Safely routing power to UPS systems and multiple server racks without compromising equipment integrity.
- Installing extensive new cable containment systems above false ceilings.
- Removing outdated lighting and wiring while maintaining a clean, safe, and controlled work environment.
- Coordinating with other contractors, such as air conditioning specialists, to integrate their power needs seamlessly.
The Solution
E.R. Electrical Services designed and implemented a comprehensive electrical programme tailored to the precise needs of the facility.
Controlled Site Setup
We began by creating a highly controlled and safe work environment. This included placing protective floor coverings across all work areas and inside the lift car. We managed all waste removal through dedicated skips and provided a thorough end-of-contract clean to ensure the space was ready for immediate use.
Robust Power Distribution
To handle the intense power demands of the facility, we installed a comprehensive distribution network:
- A 63-amp TP+N supply to a new 6-way distribution board in the second-floor plant room.
- A 63-amp TP+N supply to the ground-floor comms room.
- Dedicated 32-amp supplies for UPS units.
- Localised SP+N distribution boards and independent 32-amp supplies mounted directly adjacent to multiple server racks.
Equipment Power and Surge Protection
Protecting our client’s valuable electronic equipment was a top priority. We supplied and installed advanced surge protection across all new distribution boards. For the server racks, we installed interlocked 16-amp SP+N socket outlets. Through a detailed risk assessment, we determined that standard 30mA RCD protection could hinder the integrity of the server equipment. Following BS7671 Regulation 411.3.3 exceptions, we tailored the installation to keep critical systems online securely.
Wiring Containment and Air Conditioning Integration
We built a durable framework for all new cabling. Using uni-strut brackets and threaded rods fixed securely to the concrete structure, we installed medium-duty cable trays above the false ceilings. We also installed basket containment below ceiling level to feed equipment directly. We left flexibility in our design to alter and add wiring supplies for the air conditioning units once the specialist contractors finalised their requirements.
Lighting Upgrades and Safety Compliance
We transformed the second-floor open-plan area by replacing the old lighting with highly efficient 600 x 600mm LED panels. We added new entry-door switching and upgraded the emergency lighting to match the revised office layout. All new wiring was secured with metal supports to comply strictly with BS7671 regulation 521.10.202, preventing premature collapse in the event of a fire. Finally, we safely disposed of all old lighting units in full compliance with WEEE environmental regulations.
The Results
The upgraded infrastructure at this Tewkesbury Business Park facility provides our client with a dependable, future-proof electrical system.
- Enhanced Reliability: Dedicated UPS feeds and surge-protected distribution boards ensure critical servers remain online and safe from electrical faults.
- Improved Efficiency: The new LED lighting panels dramatically improved visibility in the open-plan offices while reducing energy consumption.
- Total Compliance: From metal cable supports for fire safety to WEEE-compliant waste disposal, the entire project meets the highest industry and environmental standards.
Conclusion
This project highlights our ability to manage complex, multi-tiered electrical installations in demanding commercial environments. By prioritising safety, compliance, and precise technical execution, E.R. Electrical Services delivered infrastructure that our client at Tewkesbury Business Park can rely on for years to come.
