Staying Safe and Cool This Summer

With the recent warm weather, it’s no surprise that electric fans are flying off the shelves. But while they help keep us cool, they can also pose a fire risk if not used properly. According to Electrical Safety First, summer often brings a spike in incidents involving faulty or misused fans.

Here are a few key tips to stay safe while keeping your cool:

  1. Never leave a fan running unattended or overnight
It may seem harmless, but unattended fans are a common cause of house fires.

  2. Clean your fan regularly
Dust build-up can clog the motor, causing it to overheat and spark.

  3. Check the cord and plug
Frayed wires or loose connections are a clear danger sign.

  4. Avoid second-hand or unbranded fans
Always buy from a reputable retailer and check for a UKCA or CE safety mark.

  5. Keep away from water
Even in hot kitchens or steamy bathrooms, fans and moisture don’t mix.

  6. Avoid draping cold, wet towels or placing ice packs on the backs of fans to cool the air.
The added moisture can seep into the internal components and cause the fan to malfunction or fail entirely.
