Safe EV Charging at Home and Work: What Every Driver Needs to Know

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more common across UK roads, many drivers are discovering the convenience of home charging. But with that convenience comes responsibility — especially when it comes to safety.  A recent report by Electrical Safety First highlights growing concerns around how people are powering their vehicles. With a lack of public charging points, many EV owners are resorting to risky alternatives at home — often without realising the dangers.

Alarming Stats: How Not to Charge an EV

  • 74% have used indoor extension leads outdoors to charge their cars
  • 75% admitted to daisy-chaining leads — a serious fire and electric shock risk
  • Over 50% have charged their vehicle in wet weather using unsuitable equipment

These unsafe setups put homes, vehicles, and people at serious risk. It’s a reminder that even the smartest cars need safe, well-planned infrastructure.

Safe Charging Starts at Home or Work

If you’ve recently switched to an EV — or are planning to — here are some simple steps to stay safe:

✅  Never use domestic extension leads to charge your car

✅
Install a dedicated EV wall-box charger, fitted by a qualified electrician

✅
Check your wiring — older systems may not be able to handle the load

✅
Inspect your charging cable regularly for wear and damage
